Ultimate Freshness With Cellulose Film
‘Cellophane’ is a flexible packaging film that is manufactured from regenerated cellulose that comes from wood pulp. While cellulose is the correct term, it is widely known as cellophane, which is the registered trademark of Innovia Films in Wigton, Cumbria.
Unique Qualities of ProCello
Despite the overwhelming popularity of its more cost effective thermoplastic rivals, cellulose film offers unique qualities that assure its place as a credible base film option in the flexible packaging marketplace.
First, Cellulose is 100% biodegradable, a characteristic that is increasingly appealing as environmental concerns intensify.
Secondly, the superior moisture permeability of cellulose film allows products to “breathe” so that moisture migrates from the product through the film over a period of time and shelf life is maximised. This property makes cellulose ideal for food products with high moisture content, e.g. doughnuts, fruit pies, hot meat pies, that are prone to mould and bacterial growth.
Third, as it is not a thermoplastic, cellulose is heat resistant and certain cellulose film grades can be used to pack food products that are re-heated at point of sale, e.g. pies and pasties.
Fourth, another important characteristic is that cellulose film has dead fold characteristics, like paper, giving a neat pack whether packing by hand or machine.
